“Dave, do you know where Dean is?”

Dave, who was still talking with George Sprague, now stood behind the bar doing moves like a hula dancer. He was telling some story, which from George’s wide grin was amusing. I would probably find it amusing too, if I wasn’t worried about Dean.

Dave lowered his rhythmically swaying arms. He looked around, clearly noticing for the first time Dean was nowhere to be found. “He was still outside when I came back in. He said he wanted to check the generator for the main house to see if there was more propane in that tank. I told him that I’d help him, but I think I was bugging him, so he sent me back inside.”

My part of the house had a generator, too? My interest over that revelation was quickly dismissed as my concern ratcheted up a notch. No one had seen him for easily an hour. Where was he?

Without saying anything else to Dave, I started for the kitchen.

“Soph, is everything okay?” Oliver asked.

“I think Dean is missing.” I knew I sounded dramatic, but I felt certain something was wrong.

“Have you checked your phone to see if he texted you?”

I retrieved my phone from my pocket, feeling a little dumb for not thinking of that first. I tapped the screen. Nothing but a severe weather alert. Great. Thanks for that. My panic went into overdrive.

“Let me check the kitchen, then Rage and I will check outside.” Oliver went to grab his ski parka. I appreciated his offer to go outside. And offering for Rage to go outside too. But Rage didn’t seem to mind. He shifted the last table into place for the group dinner with ease. That would have taken Brandy and me twice as long. He jogged over to get his own coat.

“Yeah, we’ll go walk around and see if he’s still outside.” He caught my stricken expression and smiled reassuringly. “I’m sure he’s fine. He’s got the rugged Maine-guy thing going for him.”

I nodded, hoping that was true.

"Yeah," Madeline piped in. "He grew up with all this snow, right? So, I'm sure he's fine.”

I regarded her for a moment, trying to decide if she was saying that just to be reassuring or if she somehow knew he was still outside. I was being ridiculous and paranoid. She was just trying to be helpful. She hadn’t even been out of the pub since they went to get their luggage hours ago.

“I'm going to go up to my place and see if maybe he's there." He hadn't come into my house when I was changing my clothes, but maybe we just missed each other.

I headed through the stockroom and office to the hallway. When I opened the door, I expected to find Jack settled on his blanket or eating his food, but instead, he stood at the bottom of the stairs. I could tell by the way his ears twitched that he was focused on something.

"Hey, fuzzy guy, what's going on? Is everything okay?"

"I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm dying.
